Well known scientists such as Steve Palumbi of Stanford University, Eric Crandall of National Oceanic & Atmospheric Association (NOAA), Paul Hebert of University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and Kent Carpenter of Old Dominion University, along with 60 other participants from different international and local universities composed the enthusiastic delegates of the 1st Pan Pacific Advance Studies Institute (PACASI). The 10 day seminar workshop was held from July 15 to 26, 2012 at South Sea Resort and Hotel Dumaguete City, Philippines. The GFL team that attended were Benedict Maralit, Rey Thomas, June Ordonez, Apollo Lizano, Roselyn Aguila, Minerva Ventolero, Joanne Lacsamana, Angelli Asis, Sweedy Perez and Doc Mudjie Santos who were also invited to give talks about key researches at NFRDI. Doc Mudjie focused his talk on “Toward a Science-based Philippine Fisheries Management” while Benedict presented his study about “Gene Expression Profiling of Pathogenic Virus Resistance Tiger Shrimp.” Roselyn and Sweedy also presented their research “Genetic Stock Structure of Yellowfin Tuna in Western and Central Pacific,” which also served as a topic for discussion in one of the breakout sessions. Rey likewise presented his study on “Phylogeography and Population Structure of the Gold Stripe Sardine, Sardinella gibbosa” and served as a key person during his breakout session. PACASI is subdivided into lecture sessions about the current trends in Population Genetics, Transcriptomics, Microsatellites and Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP’s) etc. of marine biodiversity and a three day workshop on how to handle Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data or large data such as differential expression and marker development etc. using different programs and software applications. A field trip to the famous Apo Island was also held to spice up the week long workshop. During the whole day experience, the participants wore their scuba, snorkling gear and endless admiration as they swim along the heated waves of the island. Several fellowship nights followed by the colorful welcoming gala initiated rich discussions about NGS applications in the participant's research works and possible collaborations among potential colleagues. As with a fitting welcoming party, the workshop was officially closed with a fun filled, dance crazed, bountiful farewell night. This workshop was organized by Old Dominion University headed by the team of Dr. Kent Carpenter, Dr. Demian Willette and Dr. Hilda Calumpong. It was hosted by the Siliman University Institute of Environmental and Marine Science and was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). According to Mudjekeewis Santos head of the GFL team “ We are very lucky to participate in this workshop since it is the first international advanced studies workshop on genetics to be held in the Philippines. I was also very much overwhelmed how the technology evolves so fast and this is very nice because we Filipino’s are being updated by the latest technology from the other side of the world. For me it is one of the best workshop that I attended because of the great conceptualization and organization of events which includes hands-on training which I think played a big role to make this event very successful”. The event also includes round table discussion in which participants were divided into four groups and was given a case study (based on the research of the student) that they will tackle and share their expertise on. The output of the said round table discussion is the most parsimonious methodology and actions that they can do to solve the problem. Furthermore, one of the main goal of this workshop is to talk about some ideas on how to relate all the data and idea that was created using genetics into conservation of marine life. Also, it aims to strengthen the collaborations between different laboratories within and across the Pacific." For more info visit: http://sci.odu.edu/impa/pacasi/index.html
