The National Fisheries Research and Development Institute’s (NFRDI) Scientist II and BFAR AMIA Central Focal Person Dr. Mudjekeewis D. Santos along with his research assistants namely, Angela Camille M. Aguila, Jacqueline Marjorie R. Pereda, and Angelli Marie M. Asis spearheaded the recently conducted planning workshop entitled “Adaptation and Mitigation Initiative in Agriculture (AMIA): First Planning Workshop & Vulnerability Assessment Mainstreaming” at the Development Academy of the Philippines, Tagaytay City last July 27-29, 2015. The first planning workshop of the BFAR AMIA team was attended by BFAR AMIA Regional Focal Persons, RFRDC Managers from different BFAR Regional Offices and representatives from DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research, and Philippine Council for Agriculture and Fisheries – Committee on Climate Change. The aims of the planning workshop is to mainstream the vulnerability assessment for tuna and sardine sectors of the Philippines and to execute and carry out the Department of Agriculture’s initiative in mainstreaming the Adaptation and Mitigation Initiative in Agriculture (AMIA) through planning of the next steps and actions of BFAR AMIA Team for the year 2016 and beyond in addressing climate change in fisheries sector. Dr. Mudjekeewis D. Santos, Scientist II of NFRDI gave the first presentation of the planning workshop which tackled the BFAR-NFRDI initiatives to climate change in fisheries sector. Dr. Santos presented the results of the studies and researches made by the BFAR-NFRDI in response to climate change in fisheries and its next goal for the years to come. This was followed by Dr. Rafael Guerrero III of NAST – PHL. Dr. Guerrero presented the Adaptation and Mitigation Initiative in Agriculture (AMIA) and its aim on strengthening its implementation. After which, Mr. Melchor Jacinto, former Research Assistant of FishACT project presented the fisheries vulnerability assessment tool (Fish Vool). After Mr. Jacinto’s presentation, it was then followed by Mr. Graceous Von Yip’s presentation which talked about climate change vulnerability mapping. Subsequently, Ms. Angela Camille M. Aguila, current Research Assistant of FishACT project presented the application of fisheries vulnerability assessment tool (Fish Vool) as well as the utilization of the developed FishVOOL V8.1, excel file used in obtaining the vulnerability rating of any selected area. After all the presentations given, all the participants as well as the facilitators started the planning workshop through giving their recommendations and ideas for development planning of fisheries adaptation to climate change for the year 2016 and beyond.
