The Philippine Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology held its 41st Annual Convention last December 4-5, 2014 at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel, Cebu City. The convention focused on the role of biochemistry and molecular biology in helping the country, particularly the Visayas region, in the rehabilitation of its bioresources which were greatly affected by the recent natural as well as man-made calamities. In the said convention, GFL’s Dr. Mudjie Santos headed the Young Scientist Forum (YSF), which was a competition for undergraduate research projects that aims to encourage undergraduate students to actively pursue their research interests in the fields of biochemistry and molecular biology. The YSF successfully carried out its purpose and was one of the well liked portions of the convention. Along with Doc Mudjie was Min Ventolero who worked as facilitator of the YSF. Aside from the YSF, the GFL also participated in the poster presentation’s biodiversity category, showcasing the lab’s study on juvenile fishes of the Philippines. Their poster was entitled “Understanding juvenile fisheries in the Philippines using DNA barcodes for management” and was presented by Angelli M. Asis and GFL’s previous labrat, Rey C. Thomas.
