GFL brought home its second Elvira O. Tan Award during the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) organized by the Department of Science and Technology last July 25 – 29, 2016.
The then DOST-TUNA PopGen team—led by Doc Mudjie, Len, Sweedy and Billy—bagged the Elvira O. Tan Award – Outstanding Paper in Natural Resources and Environment Category for their paper entitled Distinct yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) stocks detected in Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO) using DNA microsatellites which was published in the journal PLOS ONE in August 2016. The study provides evidence on the possibility that there are at least two different subpopulations of yellowfin tuna in the WCPO. The identification of these distinct yellowfin stocks bears significant impact on fisheries management on stock sustainability. The award was given on July 28, 2016 at the PCAARRD, Los Baños, Laguna during the PCAARRD Anniversary Celebration. This is Doc Mudjie’s second EO Tan Award, the first being awarded in 2011 together with Ms. Grace Lopez and Mr. Noel Barut for their paper, A Pilot Study on the Genetic Variation of Eastern Little Tuna (Euthynnus affinis) in Southeast Asia.
